Background

Avengers Age of Ultron is the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the sequel to the smash hit The Avengers.

Plot

Age of Ultron finds our favorite heroes trying to finish off the remnants of HYDRA and in the process creating an Artificial Intelligence aimed to rid the world of evil. This however backfires at the Avengers as they accidentally  create the awesome villain, Ultron.

Review

Avengers Age of Ultron has many fantastic things going for it, however this movie unfortunately has some glaring problems, but first let’s start with the good!

The Good

One of the best things with this sequel is character development. There comes a point in the film where you learn a lot about the heroes and some of their demons from their past as well. This not only creates a rich back story for the main characters, but it also creates a great story thread that stretches throughout the entire film.

Another great thing with this film was Ultron himself; James Spader did a brilliant job finding the perfect voice and mannerisms for our titular villain. There are some parts in this movie where I took a step back and tried to place Ultron in a category, whether it be humorous, sarcastic, or evil, and to be honest I could not put him in one of those categories at all because he embodies all of them during this movie. With Ultron playing with all of those different mannerisms it creates a psychotic villain where you wonder, how crazy is this robot going to become?

The visuals and overall tone and color of the film are a strong point in this film as well. The color and tone feel darker then anything that we have seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far and it is a welcomed change and even possible a foreshadowing of Marvel’s films moving forward. The visuals of course are spectacular as always especially during the brawl between Iron Man and Hulk.

The Bad

Unfortunately though there were some negatives with this movie. The major problem for myself was this movie felt about thirty minutes too short. There were some really great things that happened in this movie, but because of the length of the movie it was convoluted and unclear and Marvel had a misstep with not fleshing out some of these main plot points.

Another issue with this film was the quick fixes. For example there was a character in prison and the character just happened to find all of the materials necessary to build a device to send a SOS in their prison cell, really? That is just getting sloppy. Another quick fix was how a brand new character gets born and how a certain Avenger just shows up to complete the process. It was a super cool scene it just felt extremely rushed and like the creators were trying to cram so much into one small scene.

Verdict

I have seen Avengers: Age of Ultron twice. The second time I watched it the film did get better a lot of the problems that I first saw I was able to look over them but that is because I knew what to look for so keep that in mind. But in all honesty Avengers: Age of Ultron is a great movie. But it is not the best Marvel movie in my opinion, I will recommend seeing this in theaters.
